Notes

Onkelos renders the verse word for word and adds nothing — afresh for hivdil, the same doubled 'between' as the Hebrew. This is worth recording rather than passing over, because Onkelos is not usually so quiet: he will paraphrase to protect the divine name and to remove anthropomorphism, and here, where God is said to see and to judge, he leaves both standing.
